Target Audience Research

I also have been doing some market research - looking at the games that are popular on the iphone, and all the games that sell the best have very simple concepts, are easy to play and have bright and engaging graphics.

The iphone game market appears to sell the most to the casual gamer - someone who perhaps doesn't play games much, but wants a quirky, fun and easy to play app that they can just pick up and play. These games actually don't seem to have a specific target audience as if the app is simple enough, and has aesthetically pleasing graphics, then it will appeal to the young - who need brighter and more fun colours to keep them interested, and older audiences, who probably have much less time to play games.

The common places for people to play these games is on the train or bus, or while waiting around. These iphone games also seem to have gameplay that is somewhat addictive. Although it is difficult to know what kind of game would make addictive gameplay, a lot of games that are procedural, are fairly fast-paced and have a high score counter are very popular and fun. Also puzzle games can get very addictive to play as you want to defeat each level as they get harder and harder.

Some of the top Iphone games I have looked at:

Therefore if I am to appeal to the market that sells the most on the app store, my game needs to be easy to play, have bright, engaging graphics, have pick up and play gameplay that is fun and addictive, and since it is a music game, I need to make sure that the music is likeable and really catchy, so that people will want to go back to play my game to listen to the music!

All-in-all, I think I just want to make a game that I would really like to play and would find fun. I think if I can make a game that I personally would like to play, as well as taking into account all my research, I think I might be able to create a popular and quirky game that would be successful on the app store.
